All the tonal drawings are from the beginning of the semester. I now prefer to use gouache.

These are from photo references due to lack of terrain diversity around Otis

I tired to capture the reflection of the screen on the floor, thinking it was similar to water.

Aalaa Yassin - Terrain

A study I did of Westchester Park.  I wanted to keep my colours harmonious. However, I feel like it came out a little muddy.

A sunset at Palos Verdes. I was painting really quickly (about 20-30 min) but kind of overworked the cliffs and mountains. The bright yellow flowers didn't come out as intense as I'd hoped either. 

Aalaa Yassin - Studies

A study outside my apartment. It really wasn't working out in gouache, so I coloured over it with my Polychromos coloured pencils and it seemed to work a little better. 

Another study outside my apartment. I tried to paint the clouds by indicating the negative space in between them rather than painting the clouds themselves. I'm pretty fond of this painting; I feel that the colours are harmonious and the late afternoon/early sunset mood is established.

A value study of the previous painting. 

I wanted to challenge myself with this composition as it's 2/3 just a wall of plants. I don't feel like it was that successful and I had trouble distinguishing the lanes from one another. 

A still life I painted to try and experiment with bounce lighting and colour.

A digital study I did based off a photo. I wanted to practice lighting and see how colour theory woked.

A lighting study I did every couple of hours of the view of my backyard.  I wanted to see how the colours would change depending on the time of day. I also did a couple of value studies to show the difference between day and night. 

 

Aalaa Yassin - Joshua Tree

I went on a personal trip to Joshua Tree with a couple of my friends and classmates. It was my first time painting landscapes in plein air with gouache, but I wanted to really keep my palette harmonious. It was a lot harder than I expected to paint outdoors!

These were a collection of value studies I did. I had trouble understanding what I was doing wrong and detaching myself from line.

This was the first field trip. Learning to draw without line being focus was veyr new to me.

This seascape is one of my favourite things that I painted this semester. I'm really happy with how I left the white of the paper showing.
